Alberta Initiative for School Improvement (AISI)

The Alberta Initiative for School Improvement (AISI) was developed through a collaborative partnership of the education community in 1999 and first implemented in all Alberta school authorities in the 2000. The goal of this program is to improve student learning and performance by fostering initiatives that reflect the unique needs and circumstances of each school authority.

To accomplish the goal of AISI, the Government of Alberta invested $204 million ($68 million for each year of operation) to implement the first cycle of AISI (2000 to 2003). Based on the success of the first cycle, funding of $68 million for the first year, and about $70 million for years two and three was committed to implement the second cycle of AISI (2003-2006).

On March 22, 2006 the government of Alberta announced $71 million for a new cycle of AISI. AISI Cycle 3 will build on the success of the past six years. AISI Education Partners developed the goal, principles, and processes that have guided the initiative.

Cycle 1 (2000-2003) established a foundation of trust, created a model for collaboration, established accountability measures and criteria to provide evidence that the initiative is working, and set the stage for continuous improvement. Cycle 2 (2003-2006) consolidated emerging knowledge and synthesized what works. It built on the enthusiasm and commitment of the first cycle and expanded AISI's sphere of influence to more teachers and students in Alberta. Cycle 2 can be characterized by integration and sustainability of effective practices such as promising instructional interventions, professional development, accountability, and administration. Cycle 3 (2006-2009) will continue to build on the accomplishments of the first two cycles. Characterized by collaborative inquiry, it will emphasize innovation and research, extend what has been learned based on in-depth analysis of project outcomes, enhance professional practice, focus professional development, and expand knowledge sharing and dissemination.
