About Technology in Schools

Technology is part of every student's basic education in Alberta. It's vital that learners are able to gain high-tech skills and knowledge for the future. In terms of ICT curriculum, tools, and integration the province is a leader in this increasingly important area. A prime example of Alberta's innovation in learning technology is the LearnAlberta.ca web site: a digital learning environment for Alberta's teachers, parents and students.

Assistive Technology for Learning (ATL)
The primary goal of Assistive Technology for Learning (ATL) is to support all students, including those with special needs, in achieving the learning outcomes of the Alberta curriculum or their individual learning goals. 

Alberta SuperNet
Through SuperNet, learners throughout Alberta will be able to take advantage of high bandwidth and increased access to realize recent trends in learning technology and online learning.

Computer Adaptive Assessment (CAA)
A made-in-Alberta approach to address the individual learning needs of our students through an innovative use of technology.

Upcoming Events

Alberta ECS-12 Distributed Learning Forum 
Preparations are now underway for the Alberta ECS-12 Distributed Learning Forum, to be held online from October 20 to November 3, 2008, and live in various locations across the province on November 4, 2008.  Interested participants are encouraged to register for the November 4 forum and to participate in online discussions through the Distributed Learning Forum online community. A copy of the Alberta ECS-12 Distributed Learning Forum brochure is available here.

Information and Communication Technology Program of Study
The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) curriculum provides a broad perspective on the nature of technology, how to use and apply a variety of technologies, and the impact of ICT on self and society.

Stakeholder Technology Branch 
Stakeholder Technology Branch (STB) uses a collaborative, system-wide approach to help school jurisdictions implement and integrate the use of technology in teaching and learning.  STB works with a broad range of school technology matters, including emerging technologies, technology leadership, technology planning and policies, the Alberta SuperNet, technology standards and solutions, safe and appropriate internet use, videoconferencing and technology-related research.

Learning Technologies Branch
The Learning Technologies Branch (LTB), formerly Learning Technologies Branch—Edmonton, provides leadership in advancing the use of technology in learning and is responsible for the design and development of digital learning resources (LearnAlberta.ca) to support program delivery.

Distributed Learning Resources Branch
The Distributed Learning Resources Branch (DLRB), formerly Learning Technologies Branch—Barrhead, provides leadership in distributed learning and is responsible for the development of provincially authorized distributed learning resources. DLRB resources—both print and online—are designed in a modular format, with each module consisting of student-centred learning resources that motivate and guide students as they work through a variety of learning experiences, assessment opportunities, and integrated multimedia.

Media Awareness Network
This Web site includes Web Awareness/La toile et les jeunes resources for teachers, parents and librarians to support them in addressing the new challenges and issues that arise as children and young people go on the Internet. It provides tips for reducing the risks in the classroom.

Computers for Schools
Computers for Schools provides used computers, computer equipment, and software to Canadian schools and libraries at no cost to recipients.

Edulink
Working to meet Alberta's data exchange needs, Edulink's goal is to replace paper-driven processes with the electronic management of data.

Web Awareness Workshop
Materials are available to assist teachers in the safe and appropriate use of the Internet.
